About
Jeremy Littau has almost 10 years of experience in journalism after working at newspapers of different sizes, specializing in editing and writing both in print and online, most recently at the Los Angeles Daily News until 2004. He earned his M.A. in journalism from Missouri in 2007 and his PhD in journalism from Missouri in 2009, using his thesis and dissertation to better understand citizen journalism and online communities. While at Missouri, he helped launch MyMissourian.com, one of the first citizen journalism sites in the U.S. and the first ever launched within the university system as a vehicle for both practical experience and research.
Jeremy researches new media use in journalism, with a special emphasis personal-network approaches to information flow via such platforms as social media and user-generated media known as participatory journalism. His particular area of interest is the construction of online communities, and his concept “Web-network social capital” has been used to demonstrate how online communities both function and are maintained. His teaching focuses on multiplatform storytelling that combines traditional forms such as writing and video on Web platforms while taking advantage of social media tools that enhance the newsgathering and story production process. He is available for research and training seminars both within the academic environment as well as within newsrooms.
